Directing Musicals and Plays With Mr. Geissler
I interviewed Mr. Kyle Geissler, who is the middle school theater teacher at Blake. I am very excited to tell you about him.
When I asked Mr. Geissler what he liked about being a middle school theater teacher, he said, “I like that the actors are invested and eager to learn.” When I asked him what's difficult about teaching middle schoolers, he responded, “Kids this age have a hard time with the end product; they're focused on right now.” Mr. Geissler is open to any age group but likes middle schoolers' creativity.
Mr. Geissler used to work in New York! He also worked at a charter school, Lionsgate Academy for students with Autism as a theater teacher. At Blake, Mr. Geissler has directed Matilda The Musical Jr., BizTown, The SpongeBob Musical Youth Edition, Circus Olympus, Newsies Jr., High School Musical Jr. and many more. I asked how long it takes to direct and finish a musical, and he said, “It takes about four months.”
Mr. Geissler has not written a musical, but he has written a play. He has not had the middle school do the play he has written, but said that it would be fun.
Do you like musicals? Being a theater teacher sounds fun, maybe that's what you want to be when you grow up. It's up to you.
